Under the resource recovery contract between Merseyside Energy Recovery Ltd and the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority, more than 420,000 tonnes of household residual waste from Merseyside and Halton is used to generate electricity each year – instead of being sent to landfill.
To do this, a state-of-the-art energy-from-waste facility has been built at the Wilton Industrial estate on Teesside, which was completed in 2016.
A train transports the waste collected in Merseyside and Halton to the Wilton energy-from-waste facility on Teesside. Learn more about this on the waste journey page.
This facility uses the waste as an alternative to how fossil fuels are used in a traditional power station – using the heat from the fuel to produce steam, which drives a turbine to generate electrical energy for the National Grid. In fact, it generates enough electricity to power the equivalent of 63,000 homes.
The Wilton energy-from-waste facility is operated by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK on behalf of Merseyside Energy Recovery Ltd.
